View of Toledo by El Greco

Watch a scene from Hidden Treasures

View of ToledoDomenikos Theotokopoulos was born in Crete. He lived in Toledo for nearly forty years and was known as “El Greco” (the Greek). His dramatic and expressionistic style was not understood by his contemporaries. In the 20th century he came to be regarded as a precursor of Expressionism and Cubism. Greek by birth, Italian by artistic training, and immersed in the religious environment surrounding Toledo, El Greco remains the visual representative of Spanish mysticism in the period of the Counter-Reformation.Toledo today
